Arsenal Had No Arsenal In Them. We Gunned Them Down.

Brighton 3-0 Arsenal | Premier League | 19 September 2026

In March I sat here and wrote that Arsenal did nothing for eighty minutes and still beat us. Saturday they did nothing for ninety and got what that's actually worth.

No motorway, no service station sandwich, twenty minutes down the road and back before the chip pans had cooled. Our lot in the commemorative blue shirt for the club's 125th, founded 1901. Arsenal in red and white chasing an eighth straight win to start the season, which would have been their best start in 123 years. They got neither.

The First Ten Minutes Told You Everything

We pressed them into their own six-yard box. David Raya passed it straight to Yasin Ayari and only a Declan Rice lunge stopped the whole afternoon ending by quarter past three. Kadioglu flashed one over. Raya dived to keep Kostoulas out on seven.

Thirty-one minutes. Pascal Gross, edge of the box, nobody within a postcode of him, low right foot, off the inside of the near post and in.

1-0

Forty-five. Ødegaard broke, it fell to Saka, Verbruggen saved. Fifteen seconds later Kostoulas strode away and buried one low from twenty-odd yards. Arteta sprinted down the tunnel like a man who'd left the gas on. Arsenal's first meaningful chance had arrived on forty-four minutes. Their second went in at the other end.

2-0

A Dose Of Their Own Medicine

Fifty-seven. Gross swung the corner in from the left, Raya stayed glued to his line, and Chema Andrés climbed above Gabriel and Ødegaard and headed it in off the post. Twenty-one years old, first Premier League start, first Brighton goal. Raya wanted a foul. The referee wasn't interested, and neither were thirty thousand of us.

3-0

It should have been more. Struijk headed wide from another corner with Raya swinging at fresh air. Matt O'Riley was denied one-on-one. Yalcouyé smacked the woodwork off the rebound.

The Numbers Are Beautifully Silly

We had 40.3% of the ball and 17 shots, 1.33 xG and four big chances. They had the other 59.7%, eleven shots, 1.58 xG and two. Which is the whole point. Arsenal had the ball and no idea what it was for. Gross has now scored in three games running for the first time in his career, which at his age is faintly ridiculous.

Arteta called it "a very disappointing result and performance" and gave us full credit, which was decent of him. He now has twenty-one days of international break to think about it.

The Table, Briefly

Third. Two points behind Arsenal, and we're the highest scorers in the division. Old Trafford Wednesday, two down, won 3-2. Then this. Some week.

Final Thought

The voodoo doll stays in the drawer. Didn't need it. And wherever the keyboard warriors have got to, there's a skip somewhere doing important work.

Take care of yourselves. And each other. Especially anyone who booked a coach to Fleetwood instead.
