Nobody Walked Out On Thirty. They Just Did It Later.

Coventry City 0-5 Brighton | Premier League | 13 September 2026
Three weeks ago I wrote about Villa fans leaving the Amex on thirty minutes and said I'd never seen the like. So I spent this one watching the exits. And here's the thing, at thirty minutes nobody moved, because at thirty minutes Coventry were having a go.
We parked right by the ground, in among the Seagulls Travel coaches. Nothing to do with them, or the club, we're just a minibus and a laminated sheet, but the view was fab and the walk back afterwards took about ninety seconds.
The First Half Was Not A Formality
We had the first seven shots of the match, all inside twenty minutes, and then Coventry had the next eight.
Twenty-one shots in that first half, the most in any Premier League game this season.
Bart Verbruggen denied Jack Rudoni and Frank Onyeka
and the home end genuinely believed.
Then thirty-five minutes.
Kostoulas collected Pascal Gross's header, nodded the ball beyond two defenders and rifled a volley into the far corner.
Nineteen years old. Some imagination on that boy.
0-1
Fifty-one.
Malick Yalcouyé beat two defenders, raced through and slotted past Rushworth.
Carl Rushworth, who
joined us from Halifax in 2019
and left for Coventry in August. Our lads, wearing someone else's colours, again.
0-2
Seventy-four seconds later Taiwo Awoniyi went off, straight red, violent conduct, for leading with his arm
on Maxim De Cuyper
. Game gone at ten to four.
Seventy.
Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas in the area and Gross slotted
the penalty.
0-3
And Then Dunk
Eighty-three minutes.
Dunk took a pot-shot from distance that arrowed into the top corner of Rushworth's net.
I was close enough to hear the noise it made. Lewis Dunk, one club, five hundred-odd games, a man who apologises for his own injuries, absolutely leathering one in from another postcode. Put it on the goal of the month list and let everyone else try.
0-4
Then deep into stoppage time, Gross fed Ayari on the edge of the box, who opened his body and bent it into the far corner. Gross's fiftieth Premier League assist.
0-5
The Exodus, Eventually
Coventry's frustrated fans flooded to the exits well before the final whistle
, and I'll say this plainly: nobody should be smug about it. They weren't leaving at 0-0 out of boredom. They stayed while there was something to stay for.
The Numbers
Just under 70% of the ball, 2.69 xG to their 1.39, and our joint-biggest Premier League away win.
We're up to fourth.
Coventry are bottom, four straight defeats, no points and no goals.
Old Trafford in the League Cup midweek.
Final Thought
A point at home to Leeds, then this. Same squad. Football makes no sense and I love it for that.
Take care of yourselves. And each other. Especially anyone who left before Dunk hit it.
