Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa | Premier League | 23 August 2026
The away end turned up singing about being champions of Europe. Thirty minutes later some of them were walking out. Not at half time. Not on seventy. Thirty.
I've done a lot of miles in a minibus and I've never once seen a supporter voluntarily leave a ground before the pies have cooled. Yet there they were, filing towards the exits while the rest of the Amex was still working out what it had watched.
Eight minutes. Pau Torres played a backpass with all the conviction of a man texting his ex. De Cuyper nipped round Bizot, smacked the post, and the rebound went in off Victor Lindelof's midriff. Own goal.
1-0
Eighteen minutes. Dunk released Rutter down the left, Rutter twisted Torres inside out and rolled it across for De Cuyper to tap in from the six-yard box.
2-0
Thirty minutes. Diego Gomez nodded De Cuyper's delivery back across goal and Jack Hinshelwood headed home. Seventy-nine seconds later he did it again, right foot, and the afternoon was finished before most people's second pint.
4-0. Half three had not yet happened.
Then, because Villa's day needed a garnish, Joao Gomes kicked out at Rutter on forty minutes, VAR had a look, and he became the second Villa player ever sent off on his Premier League debut. Emery consoling him on the touchline was the most human moment of the day.
The Summer Sale Bill
Villa arrived having sold half a Europa League-winning side. Rogers gone. Tielemans gone. Konsa gone. Digne gone. Watkins not in the squad with Al Hilal circling, Emi Martinez missing too, and Emiliano Buendia asked to play centre forward, which is like asking your electrician to do the plumbing because he owns a van.
The numbers are almost rude. Brighton generated 2.96 xG from open play in the first half, the highest first-half figure in a Premier League game since 2021-22. Seventy-three percent of the ball. Villa managed nothing on target. Only the third side on record to be four down at the break on opening day.
The Table, Briefly
We are top. Goal difference, whatever gets you through August, top of the Premier League with Arsenal second. Eighth last season, three straight league defeats to Villa before today, and now this.
Final Thought
I have stood on the Chicken Run in horizontal rain and I did not leave. So, advice for anyone tempted by an early exit: the walk out is longer than the walk home, and you'll be asked about it for years.
Take care of yourselves. And each other. Even the ones who left on thirty.
