Chelsea 4-3 Brighton | Premier League | 30 August 2026
Two o'clock kick-off, Sunday, west London. Van full, mood excellent, and then I read the teamsheet and felt like a man opening a wedding invitation from an ex.
Four minutes. Bart Verbruggen and Mats Wieffer had a polite disagreement about whose ball it was, and Romeo Lavia settled the argument from close range.
1-0
Fourteen. Pedro Neto turned in Morgan Rogers' low cross after a move that took roughly as long as this sentence.
2-0
Thirty-two. Jorrel Hato ran, Hato passed, and João Pedro finished the counter and then celebrated in front of us, having been booed for half an hour beforehand. Fair play, really. We started it.
3-0. Not yet twenty to three.
Then thirty-five minutes. Charalampos Kostoulas forced a save out of Emiliano Martinez, debutant, £7.5m from Villa, and Malick Yalcouyé lashed the rebound off the post and in on his first Premier League start.
3-1
Sixty-three. Pascal Gross put the ball across, João Pedro stuck out a leg, and it went past his own keeper. Our old forward, scoring at both ends, in one afternoon, in a blue shirt. If you can explain that to a nine-year-old on a minibus, you're a better man than me.
3-2
Seventy-four. Cole Palmer drove forward and curled one into the bottom corner from twenty yards, and Xabi Alonso went off down the touchline like a man who'd been holding it in.
4-2
Ninety-six. Gross headed in. Six minutes and forty seconds too late.
4-3
The Boo Rota Was Chaos
Genuinely confusing. You boo João Pedro, then he scores at the wrong end and you cheer him. Moisés Caicedo comes on for his first minutes of the season to a reception nobody could agree on. Robert Sánchez wasn't even in the squad, so we wasted a chant. And Danny Welbeck, 35, two-year deal, sold to them in August, already off the mark for Chelsea with a header from Malo Gusto's cross in the League Cup at Luton.
We built that squad. They're just borrowing it back a bit aggressively.
The Numbers, Which Are Absurd
Chelsea had 25.6% of the ball. A quarter. They also had 2.97 xG to our 1.49, which tells you exactly what our defending looked like. We are now the first side in fifty years to score three or more in four games running, which is lovely, and useless, when you ship four.
One win, one defeat, three points from two. Chelsea have six.
Final Thought
We are very good at making footballers and absolutely hopeless at keeping them. Sooner or later half the league is our old five-a-side team. And still we drive to London to boo lads we used to sing about.
Take care of yourselves. And each other. Even Danny. Especially Danny.
